The Rock Restaurant, Zanzibar

It’s not often one gets to visit such a unique restaurant. Located on the East Coast in a town called Pingwe and perched on top of a rock in the middle of the ocean, you can either walk or catch a boat depending on the tide and the time of day.
Owned by Andre and his business partners, they convinced the council to let them knock down the original shack and brought the concept “The Rock” to life.
Booking is a must as it is a highly popular among tourists with only limited seating capacity inside. The outdoor terrace area is perfect place for pre or post meal drinks.
From every table and every angle you get the most stunning view of the turquoise blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. The perfect place to relax and unwind with a glass of wine in hand. With plenty of South African wines to choose from, selecting one may take a while. They also have an impressive cocktail menu.
Our food arrives in a timely manner and looks just as good as it tastes. My friends opted for the catch of the day served with a creamy mash, grilled mixed vegetables and a side of coconut curry sauce, whilst I tucked into a crab spaghetti. Light flakes of delicate crab meat in a fresh tomato and capsicum sauce, al dente spaghetti pasta with a garnish of parsley.
After a filling meal we unwind on the terrace with some freshly made mocktails from local fruit and catch the glorious sun.
The staff and management here are so friendly and welcoming that we feel right at home and don’t want to leave.
That being said, all good things must come to an end. We leave with such contentment that we can’t wait to go home and tell all our friends and family about it.
